PRESS RELEASE

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION PRESENTS 57TH GEORGE WASHINGTON BIRTHNIGHT BALL

Contact:  Orendain & Associates

Tel. No.:  893-7327 / 867-2829

A sunset cocktail reception, a colonial-inspired dinner, and dancing to retro music are among the highlights of the upcoming 57th Annual George Washington Birthnight Ball, presented by the American Association of the Philippines.

A much-anticipated event, the Ball will be held on February 25, 6 p.m. at the Charles Parsons Ballroom and the Gardens of the U.S. Embassy.  Event chair is Mrs. Reneé J. Speltz, wife of the U.S. Ambassador to the Asian Development Bank, Paul Speltz.

The evening’s proceeds will fund the projects of the AAP, a non-stock, non-profit organization established in 1949 to help destitute Americans in the country.  Today, its beneficiaries include indigent Filipino-American children and their families, providing scholarships, as well as financial aid for food, shelter, medicine and clothing.

A valuable contribution to the Philippine community is the RH-Negative Blood Donor program, which keeps a confidential listing of names and contact numbers of donors with this rare blood type.  The list is not limited to association members or to Americans, and all blood donations are on a voluntary basis.  Anyone who is RH-Negative is encouraged to register with the AAP.

Of great value to historians, authors and researchers is the American Historical Collection, of which the AAP is the owner-in-trust.  Housed in the Rizal Library of the Ateneo de Manila University, the AHC comprises 12,000 volumes of books, thousands of photographs, magazines,  and other irreplaceable memorabilia left behind by the American colonial experience in the Philippines.

For its remarkable acquisitions, the U.S. Library of Congress has deemed the AHC “a unique and priceless collection.”

A multitude of expensive raffle prizes, a silent auction, and dance music by the Flintstones & the Gang are among the many delights the evening will offer.

This year’s George Washington Ball’s major sponsors are the US Embassy Manila, Fluor Daniel, Teletech, Leechiu and Associates, Northwest Airlines, International SOS, DHL, Abbott Laboratories, SearchBank,  American Eye Center, Mandala Spa Boracay,  El Nido Resorts,  Plantation Bay and Resort,  Carepak Moving and Storage and Goodyear Philippines.

Other event supporters are the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, American Women’s Club of the Philippines, BPOE 761 Elk’s Club, EPJ Photography, Pitstop, Renaissance (New World) Makati City Hotel, and Santa Fe Moving & Relocation.

For inquiries or ticket reservations, please call the AAP office at 892-5198, 892-2510 or email aap@eastern.com.ph.

To raise funds for its projects, the American Association of the Philippines (AAP) will hold on Feb. 25, 2006 the George Washington Ball at the US Embassy in Manila. AAP, a nonprofit organization founded in 1948 to serve the welfare of American citizens living in the Philippines, is a trustee of The American Historical Collection (AHC), which is housed at the Rizal Library of Ateneo De Manila University. The AHC comprises 12,000 volumes of books, 16,000 photographs, a and other documents left behind during the American colonial experience in the Philippines. Humanizing the AHC are the items displayed in the Special Collections section: photos, diaries, memoirs, and other personal memorabilia. Aside from the AHC, the AAP supports various programs such as the education of indigent Filipino-American children, repatriation, medical assistance, burials for indigent Americans. It also has an RH- negative Donor program, which keeps listing of donors for this rare blood type. For more information, call Shirley Fajarito at 892-5198 or 892-2510, or fax to 867-1689.

“A Lifesaving List: American Association Keeps File of Rare RH-Negative Blood Donors”

Source: WHAT’S ON & EXPAT

Date:     December 18-31, 2005

ONLY ABOUT 15 PERCENT OF THE world’s entire population is known to have RH-Negative blood, most of them Europeans. RH- Negative is a rare blood type in which red cells lack the Rhesus factor (RH), any of the 30 or more protein substances that, when introduced into the body, stimulate the production of an antibody. Only three in every 1,000 Asians have this type of blood, probably from a remote European ancestor.

Early recognizing the scarcity of this valuable blood type, the American Association of the Philippines in 1958 established the RH-Negative Blood Donor List as a service to the expatriate community. The AAP mains an updated and highly confidential list of names and contact numbers of RH- Negative donors, who may be called upon when necessary to donate blood surgery or an emergency. Anyone whop is RH-Negative is encouraged to register with the AAP; you needn’t be an AAP member- or an American.

All blood donations are on voluntary basis and no fees are rapid to the Association. Blood recipients pay only testing and handling fees to the hospital.

To quickly respond to the emergency calls for RH- Negative blood, AAP has forged ties with the Philippines National Red Cross and other expatriate organizations, such as the Astralia and New Zealand Association and Brent International School. Blood requests to the AAP average six per month; since its inception, it has helped find RH-Negative blood donors for thousands of patients, mostly for women and senior citizens.

The American Association of the Philippines is a non-stock, non-profit organization established in 1949 for the general welfare of in-country United States citizens. Apart from the Blood Donor program, AAP also supports various causes including education for needy Filipino-American children (Amerasians), and repatriation, medical assistance and burials for indigent Americans.

For further information about AAP and its RH-Negative Donor List, please phone Shirley Fajarito at 892-5198 or 892-2510, or fax to 867-1689.
